Poultry Judging Around The World

 

Poultry fancying is an old and growing hobby all over the world.  Breeders breed birds to a set of written standards to enhance unique characteristics found in poultry.  Poultry shows are competition which judge individual birds by comparing them to the standards and awarding the birds which best meet this standard.  

 

Different areas around the world follow different standards, however they are all very similar.  For example, a poultry enthusiaste could recognize a sebright from anywhere in the world based from its distinctive stature and laced colour.  The 3 most widely used standards are:

  • The American Standard of Perfection (North America)

  • The British Poultry Standards (Europe)

  • The Australian Poultry Standards (Australia and New Zealand)  

 

We use the American Standard of perfection, which covers large fowl, bantams, waterfowl, guineafowl, and turkeys.  An additional set of standards are also used in North America, the Bantam Standards.  These set of standards agree with the American Standard of Perfection, , however recognize breeds in more varieties.

 

When birds are judged, it is done with a systematic methodology.

 

Tier 1: Breed, Variety, Age

  • Birds are judged 30% on colour and 70% on type (shape).  This can vary by breed and species.

  • Top 5 birds are awarded 1-5

  • Top 2 birds  then move on to tier 2

Tier 2: Best of Variety

  • Top 2 cockerels, pullets,hens and cocks of the variety are judged against eachother on exclusively colour.  The Reserve (RV) and Best of Variety (BV) move on to Tier 3.

Tier 3: Best of Breed

  • All birds that are awarded best of variety or reserve variety are judged against the RV and BV from the other varieties of that breed.  

  • Both colour and type are taken into consideration.

  • RV and BV move to tier 4

Tier 4: Class Champion (CC) and Reserve Class Champion (RCC)

  • Birds are judged against the BB and RB from the other breeds in its class

  • CC and RCC move to tier 5

Tier 5: Champion Fowl

  • The best and second-best fowl in each: Large Fowl, Bantam, Waterfowl, Guineafowl, and Turkey are awarded the best and reserve.  

  • Some shows award a grand-champion fowl.
